Tarmidzi retired in October 2009 as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Etiqa Takaful Berhad, the new brand name following the merger of Takaful Nasional Bhd. and Mayban Takaful Bhd. He held this post since the setting-up of Mayban Takaful Bhd. in 2001. Prior to his retirement, Tarmidzi was also the Chairman of the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) and the Chairman of the Global Takaful Group (GTG). His career in takaful began in 1985 as a pioneer management team member of Malaysia’s first takaful company (Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Bhd.). However, Tarmidzi started his career in conventional insurance after completing the associateship examinations of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) in 1978. In addition to being an associate of the Malaysian Insurance Institute (AMII), Tarmidzi also holds an MBA (Islamic Finance) from the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM).

His key interest is to increase the awareness, knowledge and understanding of the Takaful globally. It is this passion that drives him to conduct lectures on various topics of insurance & takaful throughout Malaysia and overseas as well as publishing industry-related literature. Tarmidzi is the author of four Interactive Guides on Takaful and Insurance posted on the Malaysian Insurance Institute’s website. He is also a much sought after name to speak at international conferences and has presented at international takaful conferences in London, Jeddah, Dubai, Bahrain and Jakarta.

Post retirement Tarmidzi lectures at the Etiqa Academy and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) where he is an Adjunct Professor. He is also an Advisor to ACR Re Takaful SEA.
