M Iqbal Asaria trained as an economist and worked in the City for many years as an investment analyst/manager. He was a member of the working party set up by the Governor of the Bank of England to look into issues relating to introduction of Islamic financial products in the UK. He has spoken at several conferences and symposia on Islamic banking and finance. Iqbal has also consulted for a number of providers in the UK on structuring their Islamic finance offerings.

He lectures on Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance at the CASS Business School for the MSc Finance course and for the Executive MBA in Dubai.  Iqbal is the lead person with Afkar Consulting Limited in organising the yearly International Takaful Summit in London.

He is also a special advisor to the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain on business and economic affairs and a tutor on the MCB's leadership development programme. Iqbal was awarded the CBE in the 2005 Queen's Honours List for services to international development.
