Dr. Walid Hegazy is a partner in the international law firm, Crowell & Moring, and the managing partner of Crowell’s affiliate office in Cairo, Hegazy & Associates. Prior to founding Hegazy & Associates, Dr. Hegazy headed the Islamic Finance Practice Group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Hehas over eighteen years’ experience in Islamic banking and finance.In the course of his wide-ranging Islamic finance practice,Dr. Hegazy has advised clients across the Middle East on high-profile Islamic finance transactions, from sukuk issues to Shariah-compliant structures for M&A and infrastructure projects. He has advised a large number of banks and other companies on Islamic financing, including: Saudi Telecommunication Company, Rajhi Bank, Sorouh, Saudi British Bank Saudi Bin Laden Group and Credit Suisse.

Dr. Hegazy is recognized as one of the leading practitioners in Islamic finance.  He has received a number of international awards in acknowledgment of his leadership as a legal expert and his contributions to the field. In 2011, Hegazy & Associates was awarded the “Best Islamic Finance Law Firm in Egypt” award by Islamic Finance News (IFN).Dr. Hegazy is co-founder of the Egyptian Islamic Finance Association, a regular contributor to Al Mal and a number of other local newspapers, and a regularly appearing guest on Nile TV. In 2011, he was named to the “Leading Lawyer 50” in the area of Islamic Finance by Lawyer Monthly Magazine.Dr. Hegazyholdsan S.J.D. (Doctor of Juridical Science) and an LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School.
