I am currently (since May 3. 2007) attached to the International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur as a “Distinguished Academic Fellow” of the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIiBF). I am also Islamic Development Bank‘s (IDB) consultant to the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic on the transformation of EcoBank into a full-fledged Islamic bank, and on the development of regulatory and institutional frameworks for development of Islamic financial system.

I retired as chief executive officer of the Islamic Banking and Finance Institute Malaysia (IBFIM) on January 1, 2007, and had been a pioneer and leader in the nation’s dynamic Islamic finance industry since its early days. I was deeply involved in setting up the first Islamic bank holding the post of General Manager for 18 years, first Takaful Company and Shariah-based fund management companies (founder member of the Board of Directors), and laying the frameworks for the Shari’ah-based banking and financial systems with the regulatory authorities and multilateral agencies, locally as well as globally.

While at IBFIM I was involved in the development of long-term talent development framework for Malaysia as well as for some OIC member countries.  As a pioneer member of the Accounting and Auditing Standard Board of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) in Bahrain I was extensively involved in the initial development of international accounting and auditing standards for Islamic financial institutions. While at the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board, I lead development of the country’s Islamic accounting standards.

I am accountant by training; I earned advanced degrees in business administration (MBA) from Henley Management College UK and Shahada Ulya in Islamic Studies and Shariah from Muslim College Malaya.
