Hashem, just obtained his PhD from Durham University - Durham Business School (Finance Department). He searched the Demand & Supply for Islamic and Conventional insurance in Saudi Arabia and the GCC market. His research interests are focused on:

  • Takaful & Conventional Insurance determinants variables in Saudi Arabia and the GCC;
  • Wealth Management & Investment Portfolio Strategy for Insurance and takaful;
  • Corporate Finance, Microfinance, Micro-Insurance & Micro-Takaful;
  • Corporate Governance, Capital Adequacy & Solvency, Market Conduct & Disclosure;
  • National & International Insurance Regulatory Framework per (SAMA, FSA, IAIS, OECD, AAOIFI, IFSB),
  • Risk Management in terms of Corporate Communicating Risk & the Influence of Perception, and Managing Reputation Risk;
  • Islamic & Conventional Financial Planning.

Hashem started his career as a production Engineer; he took his engineering training in the Arabian Petrochemical Company (SABIC) then moved to the Saudi Consulted Electric Company (SCECO) as an operational engineer in one of the biggest electrical supply station in the Middle East located in Riyadh. By 2002, he worked for Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA) as a Specialist Engineer. He worked for the Technical Service Department, then moved to the Reliability Engineering Department, until he promoted as project manager to maintain the reliability conditions of the auxiliary power sections of all (SAUDIA) fleets. Any failure in this project will cost millions of dollars. Such responsibilities allows him to works closely with different departments in (SAUDIA) to develop his managerial experience in terms of constructing rules, regulations, maintenance activities, financial activities, insurance implications policy, contracts validity and agreements, vendor weekly telephone communications. By doing so, Hashem has prepared and presented several financial, feasibility & reliability studies to the higher management of (SAUDIA). He presented (SAUDIA) in several international conferences and workshops (Germany & Singapore) to construct and develop the contractual and the insurance policies between SAUDIA and different engine vendors. Such a responsibility allows Hashem to discuss insurance contracts with millions of dollars.  

Hashem was the president of the Saudi society in Durham UK for 2010 and 2011 as he was elected by the majority of the Saudi society in Durham. Recently, he presented four papers at Manchester University (Takaful and Insurance Penetrations in the Saudi Market), University of Warwick (Saudis Awareness in Buying Insurance), the British Museum (Islamic insurance as financial and secure vehicle for pilgrims), and at King Abdulaziz University (Can SAMA Directives for Cooperative Insurance Reduces Poverty). Hashem has been awarded on Feb 2012 from the Saudi Embassy in London for his distinguish performance during his PhD study.
